Shattering the Shades
Share Label
Why, brother, judge the reflection of your sister?
Why, sister, dim the brilliance of your brother?
Our skins dance upon an infinite scale,
From ebony tones to golden hues, without fail.
Our shades are not walls to raise,
But stars to be praised.
Colorism is a chain we forge,
A needless weight in our quest to converge.
The western world already looks at us with disdain,
Why add another enemy to our pain?
Our struggles are heavy, our fights are long,
Why divide what, united, is so strong, so profound?
Our ancestors walked together, hand in hand,
They saw not the color, but the human.
Let us take up their torch, make our shades a song,
A harmony of light, a triumphant throng.
Let us break the chains of insidious colorism,
Look upon each other with radiant, honest vision.
Our skins, whether dark or light,
All carry the story of a proud people’s might.
