Chains and Ashes: The Voices of Louisiana
Share Label
Introduction: This comic book is an educational tribute to the lives of Black slaves in Louisiana in the 19th century. While the characters are fictional, their suffering, fears, and hopes reflect the harsh reality of slavery. Through this story, we seek to honor their resilience and remind the world of a past that must never be forgotten.
Synopsis: The story follows a group of slaves working on a sugarcane plantation in Louisiana. Forced into a brutal existence, they endure unimaginable hardships but never lose hope for freedom. While some plan their escape to the North via the Underground Railroad, others resist in their own ways—through faith, music, or subtle acts of defiance. However, with the plantation owner's growing paranoia and the constant threat of betrayal, every decision could mean death.
Main Characters:
- Eliya: A determined young woman who dreams of escaping and leading others to freedom.
- Josiah: A strong but silent man, a former warrior from Africa, struggling to keep his mind intact.
- Mama Lou: The elder of the group, a storyteller and spiritual guide who believes in the power of the ancestors.
- Ezra: A smart but fearful house slave, torn between survival and rebellion.
- Nathaniel: A free Black man who risks his life to help slaves escape through the Underground Railroad.
- James Beauregard: The ruthless plantation owner, willing to do anything to maintain his power.
PAGE 1: "THE SHADOWS OF THE PLANTATION"
Scene: The sun scorches the fields. The slaves cut sugarcane under the watchful eyes of overseers armed with whips. The crack of the whip echoes in the air.
Josiah (whispering to Eliya, sweat dripping from his forehead): "We don’t live here. We survive."
Eliya (looking up at the sky, whip marks on her back): "Then I want more than survival."
Overseer (shouting, raising his whip): "Faster, dogs! The Master wants his harvest before sundown!"
(Close-up on the exhausted faces of the slaves—some have empty gazes, while others still hold a spark of defiance.)
PAGE 2: "WHISPERS OF FREEDOM"
Scene: Night has fallen. The slaves gather in secret under an old oak tree, whispering their plans in the moonlight.
Mama Lou (softly, tracing symbols in the dirt): "The ancestors speak in the wind… They say there is a way."
Ezra (nervous, glancing around): "You mean those runaways they hang from the trees? There’s no freedom here, only chains."
Nathaniel (determined, looking them in the eyes): "There is a road. A real one. To the North. But those who leave must be ready to die."
Eliya (placing a hand on her heart, her voice firm): "Better to die free than live enslaved."
(The moonlight casts their shadows on the ground, resembling chains. The decision is made: they will flee.)
PAGE 3: "THE NIGHT OF THE ESCAPE"
Scene: The escape begins. Eliya, Josiah, and Ezra move swiftly through the fields. In the distance, dogs bark.
Josiah (whispering, pulling Ezra forward): "They’re already tracking us…"
Mama Lou (clutching a small gris-gris pouch, murmuring a prayer): "May the spirits erase our tracks in the wind…"
Eliya (grabbing the hand of a frightened child, holding him close): "Run, little one. Run and don’t look back."
(A torch lights up behind them. White riders emerge, their shadows stretching into the night.)
James Beauregard (yelling, rifle aimed at them): "YOU THINK YOU CAN ESCAPE ME?!"
PAGE 4: "THE HUNT FOR THE RUNAWAYS"
Scene: The fugitives run through the swamps, water up to their knees. Their breaths are ragged, fear tearing through their chests.
Ezra (gasping, panicked): "They… they’re coming! We’re trapped!"
Josiah (stopping, his gaze dark): "No. You keep going. I’ll hold them off."
Eliya (shaking her head, tears in her eyes): "No, Josiah… Not you!"
Josiah (clenching his fist, a sad smile): "If we stop, we die. Go. Live."
(Josiah turns and runs back, letting out a war cry. A gunshot rings out.)
PAGE 5: "HOPE AT THE END OF THE ROAD"
Scene: The survivors reach a small cabin deep in the woods. A Black man waits for them, a lantern in his hand.
Nathaniel (weakly smiling): "Welcome to the first step of your freedom."
(Eliya, Aïsha, and Ezra fall to their knees, crying, too exhausted to speak.)
EPILOGUE: TRIBUTE TO THE RESISTERS
They fled the chains and the whip, defied the impossible to reach freedom. Many died. But those who survived paved the way for future generations.
🔥 Slavery did not break their spirit. Their courage still lives today. 🔥
We remember. We honor. We tell their story.
