Les Héros africains oubliés par la France

The Forgotten African Heroes of France

Introduction: This graphic novel aims to educate people about the forgotten heroes of history—African soldiers who fought in World War II but were denied the recognition they deserved. It is not just a story; it is a tribute to their bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering courage. While the world may have forgotten them, we will ensure their legacy lives on.

Synopsis: This graphic novel follows the journey of several African soldiers from different regions and colonies, from their enlistment to their return home. Through their eyes, we witness the battlefields of Europe, the North African campaigns, and the harsh realities of a world war. But more than war, this is a story of humanity, dreams, internal struggles, and determination.

Main Characters:

  • Seydou: A young farmer from Mali, forcibly conscripted, who discovers the horrors of war but also unexpected friendships.
  • Aïsha: A Senegalese nurse tending to the wounded on the front lines, trying to keep the soldiers' spirits high.
  • Ibrahim: A veteran from Cameroon, nicknamed "the wise one" by his comrades, who becomes a father figure for the younger soldiers.
  • Adama: A former law student from Algeria, fighting for France while secretly dreaming of independence for his own people.

Key Moments:

  1. Enlistment: The story begins in a peaceful village, where the arrival of a recruiter shatters lives. Seydou is taken from his family, while Aïsha volunteers, believing she can make a difference by being close to the wounded.

Graphic Novel Dialogue:

Panel 1 Scene: A peaceful village at sunrise. Children play under a large tree. Thin smoke rises from thatched rooftops.

Seydou (internal narration, thoughtful): "The morning starts like any other. The rooster crows. The market stirs. But that day… I felt something was different."

Zoom on Seydou, looking at the horizon. A silhouette appears: the recruiter.

Recruiter (raising his voice, holding a poster): "Men of the village! The nation calls you! Who among you has the strength and courage to fight?"

Seydou (whispering to a friend beside him): "What is 'the nation'?"

Friend (murmuring, worried): "This is not our war."

Panel 2 Scene: A crowd gathers around the recruiter. Aïsha, dressed in a nurse's uniform, steps out of her house, curious.

Recruiter (pointing at Aïsha): "You, miss. A woman with medical knowledge. Your people need you on the front. You can save lives."

Aïsha (hesitant): "And if I refuse?"

Recruiter (sternly): "Refuse? And abandon your brothers who are going to fight?"

Aïsha (looking at the villagers, thinking aloud): "Maybe I can help. Maybe I can give them a chance to come back…"

Panel 3 Scene: An improvised training camp near the coast. Freshly arrived African soldiers train under the supervision of European officers.

Ibrahim (internal narration, calm): "When I arrived, I saw faces so young, so frightened. Some had never left their village. Others looked like they wanted to run. I knew this war would spare no one."

Adama (speaking quietly to Ibrahim): "We are pawns in their game, you know."

Ibrahim (placing a hand on his shoulder): "Maybe. But we must survive—to tell our story."

Aïsha (tending to wounded soldiers, whispering to herself): "Every day, I stitch the wounds of those who believe they won’t make it. And every night, I wonder… Who will be next?"

Panel 4 Scene: Departure for the trenches. A long convoy of soldiers boards a military ship under the rain. The tone is somber, faces are grave.

Seydou (internal narration, trembling): "The ship swayed, but it was my heart that seemed to capsize. I saw men praying, others staring silently at the horizon. And me… I was just trying to breathe."

Afi (handing Seydou a cloth, speaking gently): "Here, hold this tight. It helped me get through the first time."

Seydou (murmuring, grateful): "Thank you…"

Ibrahim (standing apart, observing the younger ones): "It’s normal for them to be afraid. But if they hold onto that fear, it will kill them. We must show them that we can survive."

Panel 5 Scene: The trenches. Endless rain, a gray sky, and omnipresent mud. Seydou, Aïsha, and Ibrahim huddle in a makeshift shelter.

Seydou (internal narration, scared): "I had never heard sounds like these. Every explosion made me jump. I wanted to run, but my legs wouldn’t move."

Aïsha (trying to calm a wounded soldier): "Stay with me, okay? You’ll make it."

Ibrahim (to Seydou, firm but reassuring): "Breathe. Focus on what you can control. That’s what we all do."

Adama (rushing in, soaked and out of breath): "It’s chaos out there! We need reinforcements! They’re falling back!"

Aïsha (standing up, determined): "Then we go. No choice."

Panel 6 Scene: In the midst of battle. Explosions illuminate the night, mud flies under the impact of shells. Seydou runs, his ears ringing, gripping his rifle with trembling hands.

Seydou (internal narration, terrified): "My heart is pounding so hard I'm afraid it will burst. Is this war? A chaos where no one understands anything, where we run without knowing if we’ll survive?"

Ibrahim (shouting an order): "Everyone, take cover!"

Aïsha (kneeling beside a wounded soldier, screaming): "We need a stretcher! Quickly!"

The battle rages on...

Panel 7 Scene: Dawn rises after a night of fighting. The silence is heavy. Seydou looks around. Bodies litter the ground. Some comrades are missing.

Seydou (internal narration, broken): "They won’t get up. They are gone. How many of us will return home?"

Ibrahim (placing a hand on Seydou’s shoulder): "Look around you. We are still here. We must hold on for them."

Aïsha (exhausted, hands covered in blood, whispering): "War doesn’t stop… you just survive it."

Panel 8 Scene: End of the war. African soldiers are gathered in a square, waiting to return to Africa. French officers pass by them without a word.

Adama (whispering to Seydou): "We shed our blood for them. And look… not even a glance."

Ibrahim (calm but bitter): "We fought for their freedom. But who will fight for ours?"

Panel 9 Scene: Return to Africa. Families reunite with their loved ones, but many mourn those who will never return.

Seydou (internal narration): "We returned. But not all of us. Some rest in a land that was never theirs. Some will never have a grave. Others won’t even be mentioned in history books."

Epilogue: A Tribute to the Forgotten Heroes

They fought for a country that was not their own, leaving their ancestors' land to die in distant trenches. They contributed to the liberation of France, yet that same France denied them the gratitude they deserved.

But today, we—the world—recognize their bravery and their sacrifice.

We will never forget.

Tribute to the fallen African soldiers.
